The 1800s

The 1800s were a period of change for the United States. The nation was overwhelmed with a sense of nationalism. Additionally, we saw the advent of industrialization, the election of a pioneer for president, and vast fluctuations in the economy. The 1800s were also characterized as a period of change, or reform. Many groups and individuals set out to help those less fortunate, or to champion a specific cause, such as the abolition of slavery or equal rights for women.

Another reason for reform was related to the rapid development of cities and urban centers during the early 1800s. Due to the surge in population and the resulting overcrowding, tenements, crime, and dysentery all became problems in the cities. Urban areas were in desperate need of assistance from both religious and political reformers.

During 1800s  America grew very fast. By 1860 United states had 17 new states. It was a time in which slave was present but the americans didn´t agree with that. The North was industrial, they had factories, railroads and ports but the South was agricultural.

In this decade, a lot of people arrived in the USA to work in the factories. However, before this growing period the United states had to go through the war of 1812, a conflicto between USA and Great Britain violation of United states maritime rights. The tension that caught this war arose from the french revolution and Napoleonics wars. American interests were between France and Britain.

In 1823, the Monroe doctrine declared that the united states would not become involved in europeans affairs and would not accept european interference. American for the americans explained everything.
In South America, during the early 1800s, was a period of independence. Argentina started the process of declaring or fighting for Independence from Spain. By 1810, Buenos Aires forme dan independent government for the viceroyalty of La Plata. Argentina was free by July 9, 1816 at the Congress of Tucuman. Spain loses land.

During 1800s the world was less isolated. United states was a democracy and the rest of the world wanted to be democratic like USA and the British Empire was growing. The era of knowledge and creation.

Like America, Europe was a continent in turmoil during the 1800's with wars being fought at sea and on land. The main combatants were Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia, Spain and France with possibly the best known of the sea battles "The Battle Of Trafalgar" between the British Royal Navy led by Admiral Nelson and the combined forces of the French and Spanish. Like many sea battles during the period the British were heavily outnumbered but due to the combination of leadership and better trained gun crews, they were victorious.

But in mainland Europe the French forces under the leadership of Napoleon were equally successful with defeats over the Russia and Spain expanding French influence. But, Napoleon met his match at the Battle Of Waterloo in 1816 (Belgium) against combined forces of the United Kingdom, Russia, Austria and Prussia led by the Duke of Wellington.

Queen Victoria became the British Queen in 1837 leading to the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military progress that included further growth and influence of "The British Empire." This also included taking control of India and obtaining one of her many titles the "Empress of India."

In this period, Poe delighted us with a great story “ Murders in the Rue Morgue” , published in 1841. The story is set in Paris in the mid- nineteenth century. Paris has always been famous for its artista communities in the 19th and 20th centuries, the place Dupin and the narrator share is a “time –eaten and grotesque mansión” in St. Germain, an aristocratic part of Parids. It was a revolutionary artistic and intellectual place  t develop the story. An excellent place to observ human behaviour…

Freytag's pyramid, the dramatic structure in literature

Just like life, some stories are difficult to understand. Whether you are reading a novel or watching a play or film, there are times when you have to apply certain methods to better understand what you are reading or watching. Gustav Freytag, a German novelist and critic of the nineteenth century, observed the similarity of plots so he created a pictorial tool to visually illustrate dramatic structure. Called Freytag’s Pyramid, he constructed a pattern in the form of a pyramid to analyze the plot structure of dramas.    Freytag’s Pyramid : How to Analyze a Story Words You Need to Know Conflict: a problem that occurs in the story Tragedy: a story ending in death and sadness Analyze: to look at something very closely. According to Freytag, every story worth telling has the following parts: exposition (inciting incident), rising action, climax (turning point), falling action, and denouement (resolution).  Freytag’s pyramid is used to...

Rationing in the second world war

In January 1940, the British government introduced food rationing. The scheme was designed to ensure fair shares for all at a time of national shortage. The Ministry of Food was responsible for overseeing rationing. Every man, woman and child was given a ration book with coupons. These were required before rationed goods could be purchased. Basic foodstuffs such as sugar, meat, fats, bacon and cheese were directly rationed by an allowance of coupons. Housewives had to register with particular retailers. A number of other items, such as tinned goods, dried fruit, cereals and biscuits, were rationed using a points system. The number of points allocated changed according to availability and consumer demand. Priority allowances of milk and eggs were given to those most in need, including children and expectant mothers. As shortages increased, long queues became commonplace. It was common for someone to reach the front of a long queue, only to find out that the item they had be...

C. Auguste Dupin, the original model for the detective in literature

Dupin is a Paris  gentleman of leisure who for his own amusement uses “analysis” to help the police solve crimes. In the highly popular short stories “The murders in the Rue Morgue ” (1841) and "The Purloined letter"  (1845), as well as the less-successful “ The Mystery of Marie Roget” (1845), Dupin is depicted as an eccentric , a reclusive amateur poet who prefers to work at night by candlelight        Dupin, a man of genious, is perfeclty described as a typical detective in Literature. A literature in which a crime is introduced, investigated and needed to be revealed: “He derives pleasure from even the most trivial occupations bringing his talent into play. He is fond of enigmas, of conundrums, of hieroglyphics; exhibiting in his solutions of each a degree of acumen which appears to the ordinary apprehension præternatural”         Dupin has a greater power of observation and a superior mind: “He make...
